Outside of the tribe there is darkness,
The village provides your fire,
The elders tell you the path,
Do not raise their ire,
Do not provoke their wrath.
Outside of the tribe there is loneliness,
There is safety in the group,
The truth is what we say,
Do not fly the coup,
Do not question the tribe's way.
Outside of the tribe there is coldness,
The community will keep you warm,
Acceptance will be your safe place,
Do not challenge the changing norm,
Do not dare call the changes base.
Outside of the tribe there are torches,
I bring the fire out with me,
I will find the path with my own eyes,
Fear of ire and wrath can't make me unfree,
For the rulers are telling lies.
Outside of the tribe there are kindred spirits,
A group can be built between even just two,
When torchbearers frankly can speak,
They can maybe find out what's true,
Without fear of it being too bleak.
Outside of the tribe there are settlements,
Individuals choosing to help one another,
I shall be bound to others only by choice,
And those who sharpen me I call brother,
And none would say to quiet my voice.
Belonging to a group can be a powerful thing, both for good or ill. To my thinking, if that membership comes at the cost of your individuality, then it is defiantly for ill. To sacrifice yourself on the altar of the group is to lose your honesty, your integrity, your agency, your very soul. This is unacceptable. It is literally impossible for you to be a good person without these things. The path of virtue is a difficult one, that I myself am not very far along in my estimation, but I can say for certain that every virtue requires courage, so far as I have experienced. Leaving the cult is frightening. I know.
